The Story of Leroy & Molly

Leroy (7) was just three months old when he and his older sister Molly (10) were placed in community foster care. Their mother could not care for them properly, she was living on the streets and had substance abuse issues. The children’s extended family were not willing to care for the children.

After three years, they were removed from their community foster care family as there was suspect abuse in the home. They were then placed in a children’s home for a year. Home from Home then received an application to find a suitable cluster foster care home for Leroy and his sister.

In April last year, we were happy to welcome Leroy and Molly into one of our foster homes. The children settled in quite quickly as they were warmly welcomed by their new foster siblings. Their foster siblings are much older than what they are and are very nurturing and over-protective.

Leroy has grown so much and is now sleeping in his own room. He has started grade 1 this year and settled in really well.

Molly has become used to not having her little brother share a room with her and for him to be in another space or room in the house. It has been identified that Molly potentially will need to attend a special needs school. We have requested an appointment with the grade head and her teacher in order to discuss the best way forward for her.

In March of this year, the siblings had supervised contact with their biological mother. The children were happy to see her, however it unsettled them. Leroy withdrew a bit and Wardah patiently worked towards bringing his confidence back. For Molly, it was the empty promises her mother had made that she knew were not possible. The children’s social worker is working towards what is best for them.
